Level 3 – Suggested Learning Outcomes for EAP 0360

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

Identify and use English sentence structure including:

  • declarative, negative, and interrogative sentences
  • simple and compound sentences

Use the following grammatical structures correctly in academic speaking and writing:

  • simple present and past tenses and corresponding progressive aspects
  • will and going to future
  • gerunds and infinitives
  • modals in the present and future
  • definite and indefinite articles
  • descriptive adjectives
  • adverbs of time, frequency, and place
  • comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs

Level 4 – Suggested Learning Outcomes for EAP 0460

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

Identify and use English sentence structures including:

  • declarative, negative, and interrogative sentences
  • simple, compound, and complex sentences

Use the following grammatical structures correctly in academic speaking and writing:

  • simple, progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive verb tenses
  • active and passive voice
  • gerunds and infinitives
  • modals in the present, future, and past
  • participial adjectives
  • adverb clauses of time and condition

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • . understand the difference between a phrase and clause
  • recognize and correct sentence fragments
  • use sentence coordinators to show logical interrelationships between independent         clauses
  • use noun clauses as subjects and objects of sentences
  • use adjective clauses to modify nouns
  • use adverb clauses to indicate interrelationship between clauses
  • reduce adjective and adverb clauses to phrases
  • punctuate phrases and clauses correctly
  • recognize meaning and use of verb tenses, aspect, voice, and mood
  • use effective subject verb agreement
  • understand pronoun reference and use all pronouns correctly

Level 6 – Suggested Learning Outcomes for EAP 1660

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • use simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex sentence structures to communicate ideas
  • understand meaning of all verb tenses, aspects, and moods and use them effectively
  • understand and use shades of meaning of present, past, and future modals
  • understand meanings and use conditionals effectively
  • understand meanings and use transitional words and expressions
  • understand and use ellipsis and substitution as cohesive devices
