Award Ceremony: May 17, 2013 SSTESOL Conference, Orlando, FL

Award Notification: April 15, 2013

Purpose: To honor TESOL/Bilingual Education professionals considered outstanding by their colleagues.

Who’s Eligible: Professional educators, administrators, or support staff with at least 5 years of experience in the field of ESOL in Florida.

Award: $500.00 USD each to (1) K-12 & (1) higher education professional

Nomination Process:  A nominator will write a one-page letter of nomination, which describes the accomplishments of the nominee, especially highlighting achievements, which show the nominee to be the kind of ESOL professional who should be recognized for excellence.  Additional information should be included to provide evidence of the criteria listed below:

  • Ability to motivate and inspire students as well as other professionals in the field;
  • A talent for engaging others in learning;
  • Exceptional professional service outside the classroom;
  • Involvement with professional colleagues/organizations; and
  • Continuing professional development.

Recommendation Letter:  One additional letter of recommendation (one page maximum) will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.

Supporting documentation: The nominee will send a vita or resume and a written statement (500 words max) focusing on:

  • Reasons for becoming an ESOL professional
  • Professional philosophy
  • Plans for further education and other creative endeavors, or activities that will enhance your role in the field of language education

Arnhilda Badia Outstanding Student Award

Arnhilda Badia Outstanding Student Award


Due Date:  February 16, 2017

Award Ceremony: May, 2017, SSTESOL Conference, West Palm Beach, FL

Award Notification: April 1, 2017

Purpose: To honor outstanding high school students who achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Who’s Eligible: High school seniors enrolled in a public school in the state of Florida. Must be accepted to an accredited college or university for fall 2017.

Award: 2 awards at $500.00 USD each

  1. Award Process: Applicant will write a (min) one-page letter of request, which describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievements.  Additional information should be included that outlines the applicant’s future educational goal(s), and how this award will be used to pursue that goal.
  2. Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.
  3. Follow-up: Awardees agree to maintain contact with the SSTESOL President/Board of Directors for up to one year. If feasible and schedule permitting, awardees will attend the 2017 SSTESOL Awards Ceremony to update the organization on their academic pursuits.

SSTESOL Conference Travel Grant

Due Date: Feb 16, 2017

Award Notification: Feb 28th, 2017 – Award given at SSTESOL Conference

Purpose: To provide financial support for teachers, paraprofessionals, parent liaison and/or graduate students currently involved in TESOL, TEFL, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics or a related field.

Who’s Eligible: Any of the above pre-service or in-service professionals a) who have not been awarded a SSTESOL travel grant in the past two years and b) who will not be receiving support from their own institution to attend the 2017 Sunshine State TESOL Conference.

Award: $400 (10 awards will be given this year)

Guidelines & Criteria:

  • You must be a member of Sunshine State TESOL. (If you are not a current member, you can get your membership here)
  • Only complete applications submitted by Feb 16th, 2017 will be considered. Complete applications consist of the application form and required essay that can be found below
  • Recipients must participate in the entire conference.
  • Recipients must provide a post-conference write-up of about 200-300 words regarding their conference experience. This document must be provided no later than two weeks post-conference and should include summaries of sessions attended, new ideas learned from the conference, and/or personal reflections on the SSTESOL conference experience.
